It is very important during and after chemotherapy to treat your hair as gently as possible. The following may be helpful:

(a) As soon as possible before chemotherapy avoid using products containing harsh chemicals such as hair dye, peroxide, or perming lotions. Do not use until 4 months after chemotherapy.

(b) When washing the hair use tepid water and a mild shampoo. Gently shampoo the hair for as short a time as possible, rinse the hair thoroughly. Let the hair dry naturally or gently pat dry – do not rub the hair. If necessary a hair dryer can be used on the cold setting.

(c) Do not wash the hair for at least 48 hours following chemotherapy.  For a suggested period of 6 – 8 weeks after chemotherapy wash the hair only once or twice a week.

(d) Do not apply heat to your hair e.g. Hair dryers, curling tongs, hair straightness, heated rollers.

(e) Brush or comb the hair gently using a wide tooth comb. If the hair is long do not comb the hair without holding it to take the pulling effect off the roots. Do not use elastic type bands to tie back the hair, use only soft scrunchy type hair bands.

(f) Use only mild shampoo, using only half the normal amount. Shampoo the hair for as short a time as possible and rinse the hair thoroughly.
